I enjoyed your artikel and it made me think : :)

I think this question could be asked in many other domains.

The world has changed dramatically the last 10 years.

In the end of the 20'th century and the beginning of the 21'th century technological progress was more based on hardware and performance.
Every year I upgraded my computer just to run the newest games and software.
Every year I had to buy a new harddisk or SD Card.

That has changed. Chips are fast enough now.  Harddisk are big enough.
The focus is lies now much more on software, communities, design and size. (iPad, Facebook,...)
I don't need to upgrade my computer every year anymore.

For that reason I always buy the ending model of previous year (car, computer, phone, tv, .... )
That saves me a lot of money and I'm still up to date.

Thank you Jordan for sharing.

All I can add is that whatever imaging device that is in my hand at the moment of capture is good enough for me and for what I shoot.  That can be whatever I have listed in my gear list, it can be my older film bodies and even my old Olympus D560 p&s I've dusted off and started using again.

I've found my E-P1 to be good enough for the last year. Despite the fact that a much cheaper and older Canon camera can give me substantially better photos...what's the fun of that?

To me, a relationship needs to be established between camera and shooter, only then your camera and subsequently your photos can be good enough. Is up to you really not the gear, put a medium format camera on the hands of a person who doesn't know or understand anything about photography and its not gonna be enough.

A real good blog that gives a bit of history, the reasons to get certain cameras, and maybe, if some where "Listening", a need not to upgrade every cycle of so.

Don't worry---I really want it too! Need to resist until next year when the price has dropped.

a very good read indeed, it makes you think...if what I got is good enough now why does that change when new gear comes out?? Do I really need an marginally better ISO 3200 when this already prints fantastically sharp and noise free at 16x20?

I've pretty much admitted that my camera has been good enough since about 1981, so the rest is pilot-error.

That was an interesting read, Jman.  I thought this was really the key sentence: "The fact is that most photographers aren’t better than their gear."

I think we often try to buy new gear to make up for what we should be learning about technique and vision.

Can anyone remember the point where they did become better skilled than their gear made up for their lack of skill? I think I can.
