Shot recreation thoughts?
« on: September 25, 2010, 04:36:18 PM »

I took this photo of my moms cat when I was sitting on a couch leaning far back with a 50mm Canon 1.8.  The warm colors in the background are the normal colors of my moms room with their normal lighting, the sun was coming in through the window which lit up the cats face.  Did the blue come from the daylight coming in the window?  He is a grey tabby.

I love this photo though!  Makes me feel like a touched it up but it hasn't been processed.

Just a regular old window?  20 some odd years old.  Clear.

Ah that's what I was looking for. Most windows now have a blue tint to keep the UV radiation out. Maybe it was the light bulb in the living room? That is an awesome photo by the way.

If you had it set to Auto WB it has most likely picked up the tungsten from the living room as reference point which would give the daylight on tabby a blue tinge (tungsten has a yellow bias)

Kinda special accident though.....and makes for an interesting shot.

Yeah, putting WB to the middle between tungsten and shadow will put yellow tone on everything that is illuminated by tungsten, and bluish tone on everything, that is illuminated indirectly by the sun.
Best thing is that it was unexpected, as far as I understood.

Totally unexpected.  I don't think I could even recreate it!  Thanks for the compliments.  The unexpected blue really did something neat with the photo.

Obviously I have a lot to learn about WB.  I usually just flick my camera on and start shooting.  What is the best process to obtain an accurate WB?

The one-touch WB is the most acurate, and auto WB will work too, unless your light source is something very strange.
The one-touch is done like that (as far as I know):
Set your Fn to One touch WB (Menu->Gears->*B->[Fn]FUNCTION->One touch WB);
Point your camera at a sheet of white paper situated roughly where your subject will be;
Press and hold Fn and simultaneously press the shutter button. It will ask you to confirm or cancel, or will notify you if the One touch WB was not successful. Just repeat it if it fails.

There is another way (credit to OlofOfAmserdam), which does not require a white card, but you have to remove the lens and place the camera without a lens where your subject will be, and facing the light source. I don't do that as I don't want to drop and break my lens in the process.
