Hi there, I just received my 14-42mm kit lens that I recently had repaired at Olympus, but when I put it on the camera the screen is black and I can't take any pictures. I've been using my manual focus lenses with no trouble, picture appears both in the EVF and on the LCD screen. When I put the kit lens on the camera I do notice that in the top left-hand corner of my viewfinder, or lcd a small rectangular icon appears with stars in its corner, then it disappears. Is there some sort of setting that I'm totally overlooking, or is the camera so used to looking through manual focus lenses that it changed something internally. Before I sent the lens away I could easily swap lenses with no problem.

I actually looked through the newly repaired lens, and there's nothing obstructing the view. What could the problem be. Is the aperture closing down when I put it on the camera, and if so how can I open it back up, I can't seem to operate those functions either.

Any help is greatly appreciated, and I am currently searching my user manual too!

Thanks!!

Hazarding a guess here but you could resetting to default settings with the lens attached in case you've changed a setting - can't think what offhand. Also try connecting to your PC and checking that lens and body firmware are up to date (if you have Olympus Master installed). I don't know if there are also any diagnostic tests that Master can perform - haven't really got into that programme much....

Do you hear "click" sound when you mount the lens? If not, then the lens may be not fully mounted. Did you try dismounting/remounting? Do you see a pure black screen or a black screen but with camera info overlaid?

It's working now! I took it off and put it back on while the camera was still ON, and made sure I heard the click. Thanks for the prompt responses!

Glad it's working! If in doubt, reboot--that's what the computer geeks do. In cameras, the equivalent is to turn off the camera and remove/remount the lens.

this exact thing is happening to mine..  standard lens.. if I take off the lens it seems to work fine.. but as soon as I mount the lens, it goes black and I can't press the shutter button..  What should I do?

I've had this problem twice with my E-P1, - both times with the 14-42.  Camera main on&off, lens on&off, to no avail.  Carefully moistening a tiny cotton pad with a mild detergent and cleaning lens and camera contacts, then wait a minute for complete drying off, was the cure both times. If ´bad´ contact really were the problem, I cannot tell for sure, of course, even it seemed so.  However, it worked both times.  At the time, I thought my ´next step´ would be connect camera to the "Olympus Master 2" software and update/reboot software.

Even easier than swabbing with a liquid is to simply take a pencil eraser and carefully clean the contacts with it. This trick has worked to revive button batteries that were seemingly "dead" when in fact a thin film was simply blocking electrical contact. (I now use this pencil eraser trick on all my batteries--AA and AAA included.)
