Legacy lens metering question
« on: March 03, 2011, 08:16:22 AM »
Hi everyone--Please forgive if the answer to this question is obvious, because I haven't been able to figure it out or find an answer on this forum. I just got my first manual legacy lens for my E-P1—a Konica Hexanon AR 50mm f/1.7 and an adapter. In Aperture mode, when I stop down the lens (f1.7 to f16) the image on the LCD gets progressively darker. When I take the picture, the result is exactly what was on the LCD, so the image is usually too bright or too dark. The shutter speed appears to change when I change the aperture, but I assumed the LCD would compensate for the change in incoming light. So essentially I'm having to guess the correct exposure or use the exposure compensation button (+-), which is still educated guessing. Is there a feature in the menus that I have to turn on? Thanks in advance for your advice.

I didn't exactly understand your question - are you asking if there is a way to influence the metering ability when using aperture priority mode with a legacy lens, other than exposure compensation, or are you asking if there is an option in menus, allowing the screen to remain bright for focusing, framing, etc?

The LCD gives you real time images of exactly what your photo is going to look like (unless you have it set way too bright or dark in your camera settings) so I don't believe that the LCD is your problem. What mode is your camera on?

Sorry, I was being unclear. I was asking why the LCD gets darker with a legacy lens when I stopped down. And I think I figured it out. The problem I described was happening only in fairly low light, in A and P modes; in bright light the LCD adjusted to a constant level at every aperture. I did two things that seemed to have fixed it. First, I switched from Matrix metering to center-weighed, which helped to make the LCD a little lighter at small apertures, and then I turned on "Live View Assist," which solved the problem altogether. Now the LCD is very noisy at f/16, but the exposures are consistent and spot on. Thanks for your responses.

I turned on "Live View Assist,"

LiveView Boost probably. Gears -> D -> LiveView Boost.
