I feel really stupid asking this question after 12 month of experience with my EP-2 but here we go:

In the playback mode there is a HIGHLIGHT/SHADOW display (you find it pressing the info button repeatedly. See page 79 in the manual.) As far as the manual is concerned, there is no such screen available in the shooting mode. (See page23) However, every now and then I end up in that screen function when I am shooting. I never can figure out how I got into it. I like that feature and would like to know how to select it.

I never bumped into that screen while shooting (E-P1). Maybe you are seeing the picture preview after you took a photograph? (I don't want to offend you, but that's the only way to see that while taking pictures on an E-P1.)

Yup, you are right. I am seeing it right after I take the picture. It was a stupid question but thanks for your help.
