HDR from a single JPEG
« on: January 04, 2012, 11:43:59 AM »
I've already tried to make an HDR image from a set of three consecutive shots taken with EV +1/-1 bracketing.
Then I was thinking of when you have to shoot fast, 'cos you have moving objects et al in the frame.
So I tried with a single image loaded in Photoshop and saved three times manually adjusting the brightness.
Here is the result:

The image has more punch and life but also a lot of haloing around the bottle and the screen in the background looks odd.

Why use JPEGs? I shoot raw and then export from Adobe Camera RAW to uncompressed TIF with 16 bit colour.

Yep, that was only an experiment, here it is a similar image shooted in RAW, then processed in HDR...

Sure it looks more natural.

When shot in RAW you can open the image as it is and then re-open the original file twice 1 stop under and then 1 stop over to merge and give you the 3 stops without the hassle of bracketing.
It would depend on your cameras processing power how much detail it would keep from bracketing up to the maximum (of say 7) but when using a single RAW file that has been exposed correctly the results can be better than 'in camera' maximum bracketing which could result in harsh highlights and blackened shadows.

Images pre-processed into Jpg by the camera before it hits manual processing on a PC will not gain the same advantage.

Understood - thank for the advice!
The E-PL1 can, at max, do +1 and-1 EV when bracketing.
In fact, this raw was shot once then opened and saved other 2 times with different EVs.

Here's one I tried last winter

As far as I can remember used the technique Gavin X1 mentions using the RAW file. Then used layers and other processing in photoshop with curves, Shadow & Highlight adjustment and using the High pass filter to bring out even more details and cover (link to a tutorial on using highpass to sharpen an image: http://www.photoshopessentials.com/photo-editing/sharpen-high-pass/)

That is one of the better HDR photos I've seen.

Only problem with not having done it as a proper HDR is the blow out the other end of tunnel.
