Can someone walk me through the settings on my camera to prepare me to shoot an HDR photograph?

I have an EPL1. I'm a newb, so I need step by step!

The attempts I have made have met disaster.

I have a Photomatix 3.

It says to just drag them in and hit the generate but I get a grey picture. I don't even know if I am taking the my exposures right.

I ran into the same problem with Photomatix and gave up on it. Here is how to do HDR using GIMP without any plugins. It's a good learning experience to walk through once at least.

In photomatix you have to tone map it and save it for it to look right. It will look all gray depending on your software (32bit windows etc..). also if you don't bracket correctly AND specify how many stops you used in photomatix itself, it doesn't know what to do. Photomatix:
