Aspect Ratio?
« on: February 20, 2011, 06:30:34 PM »
What is professional?

I like 16:9 and 6:6 and I know both of those are a but less traditional and don't print well.  I just like the way they look the most and how they make me compose things when I'm shooting.  I feel like they best represent how I see things.  I switch around depending on what Im shooting.

What do you use?  Why?

2:3 if printing. 4:3 if saved for web, later viewing etc. 2:3 from film and my Pentax DSLR. Never shot 6x6, neither film or digital.

I've bounced between 4:3 and 3:2. The 4:3 is good for using the full area of the sensor, but you may run into people's heads being cut off when you make a 4"x6" print. I've currently switched back to 3:2. The 16:9 setting is great for making your images feel "wider" and will display well on HD TVs without cropping.

I use 4:3 with my G1, but, now that I am cropping to 2:3 for printing 20x30. I may switch to 2:3 on my G1 also.

All my film camera's are 2:3, and 20x30 prints only a very slight crop off 24x36, but it is a little cheaper to get a 20x30 than a 24x36....

I think it is a matter of what you shoot with... Many Wedding Photographers used 6x4.5, 6x6, 6x7 and 6x9 as a standard ratio. 3x2 was considered only for Wedding photographers that wanted to play to the less financially stable.

Now, with Newspapers, and magazine journalism, 3x2 is the professional format.

In Studio, 4x5 and up are the professional format. OR, Cameras like Leica S2, or other 6x4.5 digital sized sensors.

I need some clarification about this. When i set up the E-P1 I left the ratio at 4:3 because  . . . well I honestly don't remember why. But I vaguely remember reading somewhere that that makes the most sense with the Pen cameras. Is that because of sensor size? I don't print, or haven't yet.

Setting it for the native ratio will allow you to use the maximum area of the sensor.
Some cameras (GH2) has a larger than 4:3 sensor so you can a little higher MP count at any ratio that is set.

That's correct. Only 4:3 will give you full 12.3 megapixel images. All the other aspects "chop off" part of the sensor.

Other than higher resolution on the S2 another medium formats, what's the difference between 4x3 and 6x4.5 they both are 1.333... ratio?  I never understood film format ratios.  It's like they keep reinventing the wheel.  Everyone in architecture sticks with phi 1.618, but someone way back when decided on some bizarre film ratio for whatever unknown reason.

Strangely, but as far as I know, there were two formats for pictures on 35mm film:
24x36mm and 24x32mm, the second being promoted and used by some japanese camera makers around the time of WWII. The first was the one that got more support and the later disappeared.

I use to use 3:2 for anything that was gonna be paid/printed because I got nervous about printing. But nowadays I can get a 12x9  photo album fairly easy. It also looks better than 12x8. in 16:9 you can print a wonderful looking 32x18 that'll look powerful on any wall. A lot of sites now offer 40x30 printing if you wanna go that route and 24x18 is becoming fairly standard. So now Im back to 4:3
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

And 24x18 became popular with Olympus Pens, and a few Canon (the Canon Dial 35)....
The Original Leica was a double framed 24x18, which made the 24x36 popular in the 30's

Yes, I have seen that also with many online printers.... Good thing.... I like 20x30 for my film prints.

What is professional?

I like 16:9 and 6:6 and I know both of those are a but less traditional and don't print well.

They print the same for me. You just need to trim the paper to suit after printing. Nothing new here as you needed to do that in film days too.

I always shoot using the maximum format of the native processor and then crop to suit. I shoot both MFT and with a Nikon D90 so I am working with 4:3 and 2:3 sensors.

I crop to anything I need from 1:1 to 1:2.66 and wider.
Be nice to each other, life is too short for anything else.
