Some DIY body cap pinhole samples
« on: July 18, 2011, 05:05:25 AM »
Well, it's not a lens in the classical sense, but it still forms an image because of diffraction.
The looks are not particularly tempting, but for a first try I guess it's still OK:

The hole is the smallest one you can make with the tip of a pin and a rotary tool.
F/stop is unknown, and most of the times you would have to experimentally determine exposure after trial and error.
(Camera light meter seems to underexpose more than three stops in that low light.)

The results are, well....., intriguing:

Note that <a lot> of cloning was to be done because of the dust spots, and lots of NR because of the long exposure at high ISO (30 sec. @ISO800).

Still, despite the DYI limits, not a bad result at all.
I wander what the image would look like with a 2 or holes? I guess different spacing and patterns would make interesting results...

Multiple pinholes give very artistic results too. Scroll down on this page for samples from the Diana Multi-pinhole operator:

Very well done for a DIY project!  Shooting people with a pin hole is difficult and I can see why you choose a high ISO!  Keep up the good work!

Thanks, Mark,
It would be much easier outdoors in the sun. Not sure what ISO it would need for handheld shots.

Fun!

Can you see anything with the viewfinder? I'm not sure how high the iso goes for the display, but I'm guessing you couldn't see much, heh.

With a pinhole about 20mm away from the sensor you'd get... a 64 degree angle of view (diagonal)?  Guess that'd be about a 14mm focal length. Nice wide angle :)

Outdoors, sunny - yes.
Outdoors, light clouds - yes.
Indoors - very faint silhouettes.

It seems to be about 46 or 47 degrees, according to this solver:

http://nayuki.eigenstate.org/page/triangle-solver-javascript

The distance seems to be not 20, but about 23mm, because the cap bottom is not exactly at the same distance as the lens mount.

From the above, the angle of view seems to be a bit narrower than the 23mm on m4/3 given by this calculator ( ~49 deg):
http://imaginatorium.org/stuff/angle.htm
I guess I should compare it with the zoom lens and see what actual focal length it corresponds to.

Oops, got sin and tan mixed up, heh.

Speaking of zooms, it'd be neat to mount a pinhole onto a helicoil type mount to get a zoom pinhole... hm
