Is the VF-2 worth getting?
« on: March 18, 2012, 08:35:14 AM »
I've been interested in the VF-2 simply because I almost exclusivly shoot with manual lenses.

I tried it today and it was okay, but I want to know if it would really help to shoot with manual lenses? Of course, I get a lot of blurry shots till I got it right (since you can't fully see if it's perfectly focused on the LCD.)

Should I get it? It's quite expensive, but I think I may, I just want some recommendations and know what is some benefits of it, thanks!

I love the VF-2 and use it almost exclusively when shooting my E-PL1.   The 90° flip up feature makes it especially nice when shooting down low.

I too use manual lens on my E-PL1 and am able to get fairly decent results without but I feel they will be better once my VF-2 arrives this week.

I suspect it will be well worth the investment...

It was definitely worth it to me.  If you do any photography in bright daylight it is an absolute necessity.  If you use Manual mode you can actually assess exposure using the VF-2 once you get your eye "tuned" into the way it displays your images.

I am used to setting up video exposure in manual by eye with a viewfinder loupe that excludes extraneous light on Canon DSLRs and find I can do essentially the same thing with the VF-2 on my Pen e-PL1.

It may seem expensive but it's a "must have" IMO.

The only other alternative is to carry a Hoodman Hoodloupe 3.0 (about $80).  I have the one that is part of the Cinema Pro Kit offered by Hoodman USA (with crane, and 3x magnifying eyepiece) and a second one without the 3x eyepiece that I carry with whatever gear goes out the door, camcorder, Canon 60D, and sometimes the e-PL1 if I don't want to carry it with the VF-2 attached.

Just curious about your experience with the Hoodman. Did you find a means to attach that to the camera, or do you wear it around your neck and bring it up to the camera when ready to shoot as shown in the company's promotional video? Can you actually focus the camera manually without the magnifying eyepiece?

The VF-3 has slightly lower resolution, but has a locking mechanism and is about the same price.

My VF-2 arrived today and I can say it is well worth the cost.. Focusing with my manual Minolta lens is so much faster and easier.
