Olympus Pen External Power / AC DC Power Supply / DC Coupler
« on: February 10, 2012, 02:50:54 PM »

I, like many of you happy Olympus Pen users, was disappointed to discover that there is no provision for an external power supply on these cameras.  I contacted Olympus, searched the online micro four thirds community sites and came away with the impression that no solution to this problem exists.  This has put a damper on planned  time-lapse and video projects that would exceed the normal battery charge.  There is no Olympus accessory AC adapter, and there appears to be no aftermarket product that I could find.  Most frustrating is the fact that Panasonic sells DC couplers that solve this problem for their line of M43 cameras.

I have since built my own external power supply for my Olympus Pen E-P2 and am very pleased with the results.  It follows the DC coupler model - an AC/DC power supply providing power to the camera through a "dummy battery" which is inserted in the battery compartment in lieu of the actual battery.  It works like a charm, with ample power to accommodate as many camera functions as I could run simultaneously.  Although built for my E-P2, this unit would run any Olympus camera using either the BLS-1 or BLS-5 battery. Take a look at the attached photos to get a better idea of my prototype.

Knowing I'm not the only one who has faced this shortcoming in the Pen system, I was considering building several more of these and offering them for sale.  My question to you is whether anyone would be interested?  The "package" would consist of a 2amp, regulated power supply; about 12 feet of cord; and, of course, the "dummy battery" DC coupler.  I believe the sale price would be in the $40 - $50 range by the time I account for the electrical components, raw materials, etc.  If the interest were there, I would order all of the components/materials, fabricate, and then make the units available through ebay.

I'm anxious to hear from you.

This is a pretty good idea, but won't you run into issues such as sensor overheating?

Re: your question on sensor overheating.
Not sure why that would be a concern. Like with the battery, the camera will only draw the power it needs at any given moment from the power supply.  You can ask your camera to "sleep" despite there being 1.5 amps in the battery. I don't believe this is different from any external power supply for any digital camera.
Perhaps you could expand on your question.

Because there was an issue that I remember a few years back with the E-P1 sensor overheating when taking too long of a video and the quality becoming much noisier and lower. Perhaps I'm remembering it wrong?

I'm not familiar with that issue.
I know that all of the cameras in the Pen line (most digital still cameras with a video funtion, for that matter) self-limit the video file size and recording time.

The point of the external power supply is simply to have power when you need it for as long as you need it without having to lose your set-up to change (and recharge) batteries.

I like it.  :) Would be great if it could be made into a camera grip and allow the use of the battery (or two batteries) along with being able to plug into the wall. That would have more demand as none of the PENs except for the OM-D EM-5 have grips/ extra batts with Dc ins made for them, nor does Olympus plan on making one for them.

Anyway PMed you, I think its awesome!

May anyone point me to something for my G3?
