Oly T20 flash for E-P1
« on: October 31, 2011, 06:05:19 PM »
Hi everyone!
i was looking for an external flash for my ep-1 ´cause its a really big shame i can´t take decent pictures in low light with such wonderfull camera.
the reason of my complaints is because the last time my kid got a school festival it was poorly lit and my e-p1 pics were a total mess with high iso-high noise-low detail for a little kid 30ft away.
so i decided to get  an external flash but here in my country olympus products are one of twi things: unfindable or expensive.
my first finding was a second hand olympus T20 flash which seemed to work around the 4-6V mark and which is auto-TTl for the OM2 cameras. it has a GN 20 and can be used manually at full power only. i got it and seems to work just fine. it was a relative bargain ´cause the first ones i saw where around $80 and i got it for around $35

The second alternative, after asking dozens of new and second hand photo stores was a YN 462 with swivel head and dial-turn adjustable power. after asking the person on the store about the shoe voltage she just measured it and the mark was 3.5V just perfect! i got it for $100.

Have any of you used any of those on any MFT camera? Have any issues with those?
altough these where no cheap, they where also the most affordable since the FL-36R is around $380

Have you tried one of the cheaper new Olympus flash models? They should be acceptable. The problem with an older flash is your voltage rating and the TTL with the camera might be having issues.

I use a Canon TTL type flash by Sunpak (A5000). can do "A" with any f/stop or Manual, (set the camera on "M" though...1/160 and any f/stop... make sure you set the flash for your f/stop).
It has a T/S head, and Zoom (35-105.. Manual on a Non-Canon).
it has 1:1 to 1:16 power, 1st or 2nd curtain sync, and uses 4 "AA" bats...
No worry about voltage either.
it has one extra contact (4+Center), but, I have never had a problem with it on my G3 (Same shoe as the Oly Digital)

I also have a T32, (28mm coverage, with tilt flash... same low profile as the T20, but uses 4 "AA" bars,  more powerful, with 3 auto f/stops, and 1:1 to 1:4 power....
BUT, use a Safe-Sync Hot-Shoe > Hot-Shoe adapter..

The problem here is that oly does´t sell almost anything except few compact cameras and no accessories! you can´t find even 40.5mm uv filters nowhere. you can´t even find the new pens at all! the best choice is to look elsewhere (hard lesson to learn).
here in mexico is easier to find anything you want from nikon or canon or sony.

40.5 is a common size for film RF camera lenses...
Try "heavystar" on eBay.. He has a ton of hoods at the smaller sizes.
You can also search for "40.5 lens hoods" on eBay.
