I made a camera strap!
« on: November 30, 2011, 02:04:02 PM »
I've been thinking about getting a really simple non-adjustable leather strap (or two) for a while, but I couldn't really justify paying what Gordy's and similar straps cost. So... I made one myself:

I spent about $12 on materials, which got me enough to make 4 straps :)

It was pretty straightforward, although I did make it a bit more complicated by using very small rings. To fit the rings in the loops, I hade to make little half moon cut outs so the center section of the leather was narrow enough for the rings to rotate freely. Then I put the rings in place, glued the loops shut, punched out the holes for the "seams" (two on each side, about 1 centimeter apart) and tied it up with about 4 wraps of string. And just to be on the safe side I put a dab of superglue on the knots. All in all it took about half an hour, including trying to figure out what to do.

are you going to sell these?

Nah, I'm not much of a business person, and I know I'd be terrible at keeping up with orders. I just like to make stuff for myself ;D

Looks pretty fancy. Stronger than the Olympus strap?

It's probably not as strong, but it should definitely be strong enough for lightweight cameras like the E-P3, E-P1 and Minolta Hi-Matic F, which is what I'm gonna put these on.

And the rings are the basic key rings in a small size? Yours look thicker than I have seen before.

Yeah those are just bog standard key rings. I think they look thick because they're so small. They're actually thinner than the D-rings that came with the camera.

I should really add to this as I make straps not just for my camera, but also for cell phones, bags, accessories ETC.

I'll post some modded stuff as well later on, but I can say what I did was get a classic Canon FD strap and added to lever hooks so I can easily take off the strap whenever necessary in less than 2 seconds.
Please check out my website for more photos and information.
